Upgrading your business internet service: Should you wait for infinity?

 In Internet & WI-FI

With business in Essex & London continuing to do more and more online we’re all craving a faster business internet service and more bandwidth! Business owners are increasingly finding a massive difference in what’s available on the domestic market as opposed to the business market. It’s a common frustration we hear all the time, you can get super speedy fibre optic infinity internet at home, where it’s just your family watching Netflix, but when you’ve got 10 people in the office trying to work, the service is dead slow, and it’s costing you time and money! What you need is “Fibre Optic Infinity” or to give it its correct name, Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC) but will you ever get it?

Here’s the thing, government have set targets to for the UK to get FTTC connectivity levels up, but that applies to residential addresses not business internet service. Also they will target densely populated areas such as towns and highly populated residential areas. The benefits are two fold, each cabinet costs about £30k to upgrade so they need to maximise connections to get the best return on investment whilst hitting the growth targets at the same time. Industrial estates and business parks just don’t tick those boxes.

So is it worth the wait? Maybe, but at what cost. Some small business parks or industrial estates are in the middle of residential areas and if your local cabinet is upgraded then Bingo! You’re in business, but what if you’re not? Well, to be blunt you could be waiting years for an upgrade to your business internet service. Years of frustration with slow connections, lost productivity and employees bending your ear about how they can’t do what they need to do. BUT there are alternatives which many business just aren’t aware of.

Let’s take it back a few years, it wasn’t that long ago when business internet service was just used for emails and a bit of web surfing at lunch time. Things have changed rapidly over the last few years. Now we’re all reliant on email and the web, we have cloud based databases, Voice over internet, CCTV over internet, maybe your server is cloud-based, Office 365 is getting huge, Skype, off site back up, Angry Birds – whatever, the point is were all using ten times more than we were 5 years ago. Even if you’re not, I bet your business neighbour is, and on shared services like ADSL or FTTC that matters! If they use more, you’ll slow down for sure, and when the kids all come home from school and go online to do their homework (or Playstation in my kids case) forget it!

So what can you do? Well the answer is to get a dedicated business internet service, one that’s just for you and not shared with anyone else. We can arrange dedicated copper services (called EFM) or dedicated fibre services (called leased lines), the speed is guaranteed and it’s not shared so it never slows down. “But they cost a fortune right?” well they certainly cost more than a shared home service but you expect that, I suppose. They may not cost as much as you think, and dedicated services often allow you to reduce other costs elsewhere so the net expenditure is not too bad. Taking a dedicated service will allow you to cease your existing broadband and the line that carries it, and with a stable internet connection you could move your phone lines to internet lines saving there too. For example, a small office with 4 phone lines and rubbish shared internet is probably paying around £100 a month. An EFM might cost £220 a month, but would allow you to cease the £100 services, net cost £120 a month. In return you get a solid, stable business grade internet connection, increased efficiency and a happy office…and who doesn’t want that!
