CAT6 cable is now the default choice of up to 100% of data cabling installations in RM1 offices. The cable can carry data speeds of up to one Gb, over a 100m distance, and up to 10Gb over shorter distances (40m max). Because these speeds exceed external (i.e. internet) speeds, Cat 6 will satisfy for virtually all SME and company network requirements in RM1.
CATEGORY 6A STRUCTURED CABLING (“CAT 6A”)
Used in situations where high bandwidth (10 Gigabites standard) is required, Cat 6a is more costly than Cat 6, and is subsequently only used in high demand locations or for RM1 businesses that want the faster option installed.
CATEGORY 7A & CATEGORY 8 STRUCTURED CABLING (“CAT 7A & CAT 8”)
Still at early stages, the CAT 7A and Cat 8 cabling is capable of speed of up to 40 Gigabites.
Expensive compared to Cat 6 and Cat 6a, it provides far greater bandwidth than the other standards.
All of the standards are backward compatible, e.g. Cat 6 patch leads will work on Cat 5e cabling.
FIBRE OPTIC NETWORKS
Fibre can carry 10x the amount of data over 20x the distance in a single core, reducing installation time and cable bulk. Fibre optic networks provide a robust and future-proof solution that is designed for the data-hungry digital era of VoIP calls and video conferencing.
